The Day the Auditor Asks “Why?”

In tax reporting, most discussions revolve around accuracy. Institutions invest significant effort to ensure that calculations are correct, tax rates are applied properly, and reports are delivered on time. As long as the numbers look right, it is easy to assume that the job is done.

However, anyone who has been involved in an audit knows that the most important question is often not whether a number is correct. It is how that number was derived.

A gain of €50,000 on a tax report may be perfectly accurate. But if an auditor asks which transactions contributed to that result, how acquisition costs were determined, whether corporate actions were reflected correctly, or which tax rules were applied during the calculation, accuracy alone is no longer sufficient.

This is where traceability becomes critical.

The challenge is that tax reporting is rarely the result of a single calculation. It is the outcome of countless decisions made throughout the lifecycle of a portfolio. Transactions are classified, corporate actions are processed, tax rules are applied, historical positions are adjusted, and jurisdiction-specific requirements are taken into account. By the time the final figure appears in a report, it often represents years of accumulated logic.

That complexity is usually invisible. Clients see a number. Advisors see a number. Even internal teams often focus on the result rather than the path that led to it.

An auditor, however, follows the opposite approach. They start with the result and work backwards.

Can every step be reconstructed? Can every assumption be explained? Can the institution demonstrate why a particular treatment was applied and show that the same logic was applied consistently elsewhere?

These questions are becoming increasingly important as portfolios become more international and reporting requirements become more complex. In many cases, the ability to explain a result has become just as valuable as the ability to calculate it.

This is why modern tax reporting is no longer only about accuracy. Accuracy tells you that the result is correct. Traceability tells you whether you can prove it.

And when the auditor asks “Why?”, that distinction suddenly matters a great deal.
