The Next 5 Countries Banks Will Care About

When discussing international tax reporting, the conversation usually revolves around the same jurisdictions.

Germany. France. Switzerland.

And for good reason. They remain some of the most important markets for private banks and wealth managers.

However, if we look at where cross-border complexity is increasingly emerging, a different group of countries starts to appear.

Not necessarily because they are the largest markets.

But because they are becoming increasingly relevant to internationally mobile clients.

Take Belgium, for example. Often overlooked in strategic discussions, yet highly relevant when it comes to tax reporting requirements and cross-border wealth structures.

Italy continues to attract significant private wealth while maintaining a reporting environment that requires careful handling and local expertise.

Portugal remains an important destination for internationally mobile individuals, even as tax frameworks evolve and previously attractive regimes become more complex.

The UAE has established itself as a global wealth hub, creating new challenges for institutions serving internationally connected clients whose assets, tax obligations and reporting requirements span multiple jurisdictions.

And Greece, while rarely mentioned alongside Europe's major financial centres, continues to attract foreign investors and retirees, creating additional reporting scenarios that many institutions were not dealing with a decade ago.

What these countries have in common is not size.

It is mobility.

As clients become more international, tax reporting becomes less focused on a handful of major jurisdictions and more focused on the ability to support a growing number of cross-border situations.

For banks, this raises an important question:

Is your reporting infrastructure prepared for the next market your clients choose — not just the markets you support today?

Because in many cases, international growth does not begin with opening a new office.

It begins when a client changes residency.
